Transcatheter atrial septal defect closure in the elderly: the decisive role of balloon testing
Atrial septal defect (ASD), one of the most common types of congenital heart disease, can be diagnosed and treated early in life but frequently remains undetected until adulthood.1 Over time, the haemodynamic complications of a simple ASD depend on the size of the defect, right and left ventricular compliance, and right and left atrial pressures. A clinically significant ASD with chronic left-to-right shunting often leads to arrhythmias, right-sided heart failure and/or pulmonary arterial hypertension. In addition, as highlighted almost 60 years ago in Dexter’s classic essay, patients with ASD and long-standing shunt...

Transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect in the elderly: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions Transcatheter ASD closure is beneficial for the elderly population since it improves functional capacity, biventricular dimensions, pulmonary pressures, TR severity and BNP. However, the incidence of atrial arrhythmias did not change significantly after the intervention. PROSPERO registration number CRD42022378574. (Source: Heart)

Case Series: Exposure to Glucagon-like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonist in the First Trimester of Pregnancy in Two Siblings
CONCLUSION: This report contributes to our knowledge of fetal exposure to exenatide. Large-scale randomized studies are needed for its safe use in pregnancy.PMID:37937565 | DOI:10.2174/0118715303252109231023115112 (Source: Endocrine, Metabolic and Immune Disorders Drug Targets)

Comparison of Ultrafast and Fast Track Extubation After Secundum Atrial Septal Defect Surgery in Pediatric Age Group
CONCLUSION: In this study, it was observed that the UFT extubation was safe for the patients who were operated for secundum ASD, in the pediatric age group, and had a cross-clamp time not exceeding 15 minutes. It was found that the amount of drainage, length of stay in the intensive care unit, post-intensive care unit and the total hospital stay of patients extubated on the operating table were shorter.PMID:37937527 (Source: Acta Chirurgica Belgica)
