Molecular epidemiology and virulence of goose astroviruses genotype-2 with different internal gene sequences
Goose astrovirus (GAstV) is a small, non-enveloped, single-stranded, positive-sense RNA virus. GAstV has rapidly spread across various regions in China since 2016. In Sichuan, out of 113 samples were collected from goose diseases between 2019 and 2022, 97 were positive for GAstV through PCR testing. Remarkably, over the past three years, GAstV outbreak in Sichuan has accounted for an astonishing 85.8% of all goose-origin viruses. Among these cases, 63.9% had single GAstV infections, 29.9% had dual infections, and 6.2% had quadruple infections. To comprehend the variations in virulence among distinct strains of GAstV. 12 re...

Development and application of a multiplex PCR method for the simultaneous detection of goose parvovirus, waterfowl reovirus, and goose astrovirus in Muscovy ducks
J Virol Methods. 2023 Nov 27:114857. doi: 10.1016/j.jviromet.2023.114857. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTA multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method was developed to detect and distinguish goose parvovirus (GPV), waterfowl reovirus (WRV), and goose astrovirus (GAstV). Three pairs of primers were designed based on conserved regions in the genomic sequences of these enteric viruses and were used to specifically amplify targeted fragments of 493bp from the viral protein 3 (VP3) gene of GPV, 300bp from the sigma A-encoding gene of WRV, and 156bp from the capsid protein-encoding gene of GAstV. The results showed that the ...

Diversity of classic and novel human astrovirus in outpatient children with acute gastroenteritis in Shanghai, China
This study was aimed at investigating the diversity and epidemiology of classic and novel HAstV in outpatient children aged 0–16 years old with AGE in Shanghai.MethodsFrom May 2020 to December 2022, a total of 1,482 stool samples were collected from children diagnosed as AGE from the Children’s Hospital of Fudan University. HAstV was identified using pan-astrovirus consensus primers by Reverse transcription PCR.ResultsDuring the study period, 3.3% (49/1,482) of specimens were identified as HAstV, with a detection rate of 2.5% (37/1,482) for classic HAstV and 0.8% (12/1,482) for novel HAstV. Among the 12 novel HAstV str...

Detection and diversity of gastrointestinal viruses in wastewater from Caracas, Venezuela, 2021-2022
Virology. 2023 Oct 23;589:109913. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2023.109913. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTGastrointestinal viruses (GIV) are an important cause of childhood morbidity and mortality, particularly in developing countries. Their epidemiological impact in Venezuela during the COVID-19 pandemic remains unclear. GIV can also be detected in domestic sewage. Ninety-one wastewater samples from urban areas of Caracas collected over 12 months and concentrated by polyethylene-glycol-precipitation, were analyzed by multiplex reverse-transcription-PCR for rotavirus/calicivirus/astrovirus and enterovirus/klassevirus/cosavirus, an...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 2164: Prevalence and Characterization of Gastroenteritis Viruses among Hospitalized Children during a Pilot Rotavirus Vaccine Introduction in Vietnam
h Parashar Tate Trang Rotavirus (RV), norovirus (NoV), sapovirus (SaV), and human astrovirus (HAstV) are the most common viral causes of gastroenteritis in children worldwide. From 2016 to 2021, we conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study to determine the prevalence of these viruses in hospitalized children under five years old in Nam Dinh and Thua Thien Hue provinces in Vietnam during the pilot introduction of the RV vaccine, Rotavin-M1 (POLYVAC, Hanoi, Vietnam). We randomly selected 2317/6718 (34%) acute diarrheal samples from children <5 years of age enrolled at seven sentinel hospitals from...
