treading into unknown waters - patient's parent was in traumatic accident and dad wants me to check in with kiddo.
So I did an eval on a kiddo who had a very classic aspergers vibe (like referred to a type of bugs as "phasmids" on a certain test). His parent was shot while waiting for him at a service session. She seems to be out of the woods and is having a miraculous recovery, but is still in the hosp. Father reached out to me to see if I could meet with him to just see how he doing. Of course, I said "yes." I did tell dad this kind of stuff is new to me, so we will be figuring out together and I... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pushy biology professor and me being a pushover
I had it drilled in my head that I wanted to be a doctor, I was aiming high, but the thing is, I'm kind of a pushover, and am sensitive to feedback from others, and my biology professor when I told him I wanted to be a doctor aggressively insisted I don't become a doctor, saying it isn't fit for me. which hurt my feelings because I actually looked up to him as another aspie (person with asperger's). he now makes the class repeat every day, him:"ladies and gentlemen what is our principle... Autism and gender dysphoria
I recently tested a teenage girl who has accumulated the following diagnoses in 5+ years: ADHD, ASD, OCD, Bipolar, MDD, GAD, and Gender Dysphoria. Has anyone ever worked with a someone with ASPERGERS (I know it isn't technically a diagnosis anymore but I feel it better captures her presentation) and Gender Dysphoria? I am certain she is on the spectrum, but I can't really discern if she thinks she is meant to be a boy because she feels different than everyone else, or if it's true gender... Challenges of ASD when working with patients
As a medical student with mild ASD (when I was first diagnoses, Asperger's was still its own thing), I have some advantages and some disadvantages. The calm, data driven thought process I have is useful in understanding the science of medicine, but my difficulty in reading social cues makes patient interaction uncomfortable for me. I was wondering if any other students in a similar situation to mine had any luck finding any training or similar that they found helpful in improving their... Revealing that I have Asperger's to my Autism Research Lab? Good or bad idea?
Every struggle I've had in my life can be traced back to Asperger's. It is by far the most important part of my identity. I don't have an official diagnosis as I am a broke college student, as many of us are. However, I have been active member of the Asperger's online community for a couple of years and I'm 99% sure I have it based on the diagnostic criteria we use and the behaviors I study. I can't decide whether or not to reveal this to other members of my lab or to use it on graduate... Revealing that I have Asperger's to my Autism Research Lab? Good or bad idea?
