Deconvolution of synovial myeloid cell subsets across pathotypes and role of COL3A1+ macrophages in rheumatoid arthritis remission
ConclusionThis study reported unexplored associations between different pathologies and myeloid cell subtypes. We also identified a fibroblast-and-M2-like cluster named COL3A1+ Mp, which potentially contributes to synovial immune homeostasis. Targeting the development of COL3A1+ Mp may hold promise for inducing RA remission. (Source: Frontiers in Immunology)

A large cohort comparison of very late-onset systemic lupus erythematosus with younger-onset patients
CONCLUSIONS: Compared with younger patients, in vlSLE, female predominance is less pronounced. Arthritis, anti-dsDNA antibodies and low C3 levels are less frequent. SS and RA are more common. Despite lower disease activity, vlSLE patients have the lowest survival rate. While uncommon, SLE should not be excluded as a possible diagnosis in the elderly.PMID:38526004 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/jgsyos (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Elevated DAS28-ESR in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have comorbid fibromyalgia is associated more with tender joint counts than with patient global assessment or swollen joint counts: implications for assessment of inflammatory activity
CONCLUSIONS: DAS28-ESR is elevated significantly in FM+ vs. FM- RA patients; pooled effect sizes were highest for TJC, followed by PATGL, SJC and ESR. The findings appear relevant to response and remission criteria, treat-to-target, and general management of RA.PMID:38525998 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/vfvso2 (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Demographic and Clinical Profile of Pediatric Uveitis in Delta Region, Egypt
CONCLUSION: Anterior uveitis was the most frequent presentation in our pediatric cohort. Despite the challenges, the majority of children with uveitis exhibited no significant visual impairment, with most causes of visual loss being reversible.PMID:38527189 | DOI:10.1080/09273948.2024.2328789 (Source: Ocular Immunology and Inflammation)

Evaluation of diagnostic and therapeutic delay in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis
CONCLUSIONS: According to our results, greater diagnostic delay was found in PsA compared to RA, in patients living in small-medium cities, in those who did not receive the diagnosis from a rheumatologist, in those who were previously misdiagnosed, and in seronegative RA.PMID:38523584 | DOI:10.4081/reumatismo.2024.1607 (Source: Reumatismo)

Varicella-Zoster Meningitis and Myelitis After Herpes Zoster Dermatitis Treatment With Amenamevir: A Case Series and Literature Review
In this report, we present four cases of VZV meningitis and myelitis following amenamevir treatment for HZ dermatitis with positive VZV DNA in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) revealed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three of them were considered immunocompromised hosts given the fact that two of these patients were taking immunosuppressive drugs for rheumatoid arthritis, and one patient had a history of sigmoid colon cancer (four months after resection). After HZ onset, amenamevir, which has poor CSF transfer, was prescribed for all the patients, and all of them developed central nervous complications by VZV (meningitis in t...

Evaluation of childhood malignancies presenting with musculoskeletal manifestations from two different divisions: a multicenter study
CONCLUSIONS: Malignancies may present with only MSK system complaints in childhood. Therefore, malignancies should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with MSK complaints.PMID:38523382 | DOI:10.24953/turkjped.2023.446 (Source: The Turkish Journal of Pediatrics)

An Unusual Case of Non-typhoidal Salmonella Bacteremia Causing Life-Threatening Aortitis
Cureus. 2024 Feb 21;16(2):e54645. doi: 10.7759/cureus.54645. eCollection 2024 Feb.ABSTRACTNon-typhoidal Salmonella typically presents with gastroenteritis. However, an invasive Salmonella infection, which may be typically seen in immunocompromised patients, has a propensity for aortic involvement, especially in patients with risk factors for atherosclerosis. Here we present a 60-year-old female with multiple comorbid conditions and currently on immunosuppressants for rheumatoid arthritis, who presented with nausea, vomiting, and fever of three weeks duration and was found to have Salmonella bacteremia. Blood cultures were ...

Ruxolitinib improves the inflammatory microenvironment, restores glutamate homeostasis, and promotes functional recovery after spinal cord injury
Neural Regen Res. 2024 Nov 1;19(11):2499-2512. doi: 10.4103/NRR.NRR-D-23-01863. Epub 2024 Jan 31.ABSTRACTJOURNAL/nrgr/04.03/01300535-202419110-00030/figure1/v/2024-03-08T184507Z/r/image-tiff The inflammatory microenvironment and neurotoxicity can hinder neuronal regeneration and functional recovery after spinal cord injury. Ruxolitinib, a JAK-STAT inhibitor, exhibits effectiveness in autoimmune diseases, arthritis, and managing inflammatory cytokine storms. Although studies have shown the neuroprotective potential of ruxolitinib in neurological trauma, the exact mechanism by which it enhances functional recovery after spin...
