Is eye lash lift safe and effective? episode 209
It’s a solo Beauty Brains podcast. Chemical Free RantSince I’m going solo, there are a few topics I’d like to rant about. Let’s start with chemical free. Can someone tell me something, what do people mean when they claim “chemical free”? I look at the world from the standpoint of a scientist but you don’t have to be a scientist to know that everything is a chemical right?  I mean, that was the kind of thing we learned in grade school. Right? I know a lot of people don’t like science in school but everyone knows about atoms and molecules and chemicals right? Am I mistaken here?   So, I ha...

Is store brand mouthwash as good as name brands? Episode 153
This study was published in Cell Regeneration Journal and it shows that stem cells from urine could be grown into tiny tooth-like structures. The researchers are from China and hope that someday their technique could be used to replace lost teeth. Of course not everyone agrees with this approach. One stem cell researcher noted that that “that goal faces many challenges.” No kidding. But seriously, there are other, richer, sources of stem cells than urine so this seems like an odd choice. Regardless, just in case this catches on I’ve begun designing companion products to go with urine teeth the first product I’ll be...

Should you be worried about aluminum in deodorants? Episode 134
Should we be worried about aluminum in deodorants? Erin asks…Should we be worried about aluminum in deodorants? First of all don’t get confused between anti-perspirant and deodorants. Anti-perspirants contain aluminum salts that help plug your pores so you don’t sweat as much. Deodorants do not contain aluminum and they don’t stop you from sweating. They only reduce body odor. (By using fragrance or anti-bacterial compounds.) This started around 1985. Researchers found that Alzheimers patients had high levels of aluminum in their brains. There have been a number of studies since then – at least o...

Allison says… I have a question about bath soaks. I’ve heard a lot of buzz about mustard seed baths, epson salt baths, Dead Sea mineral baths, etc. Can taking a bath with any of these ingredients really help with detoxing your skin or absorbing nutrients? Thanks for the question Allison first of all let’s get one thing clear: taking a bath in anything is not going to detox your body. That’s because your body doesn’t cleanse itself of to...

Julia from Germany asks…I have very dry skin so I use hand cream a lot. I read an article that said if you use too much hand cream the skin on your hands can not regenerate properly anymore because it becomes dependent on the hand cream. Is this true? I wish Julia had included a link to the article so we could get more details but without further information we have to say this sounds like a misunderstand. There’s nothing about the chemistry of h...

Preservative free products can be dangerous! Episode 91
Perfume for poop I never realized how important it is to have a good perfume for poop. We really take a lot of things for granted living in a first world country and one of them is proper sanitation. A lot of places lack proper plumbing and instead use latrines or outdoor toilets. That’s not as much fun as it sounds like because sometimes the stench in these latrines becomes so great the people stop using them and just go outside. When that happens the groundwater can become contaminated which leads to the spread of all sorts of illnesses. This is not a trivial problem – it affects about 2.5 billion people ...

My favorite 8 moments from Perry’s Dr. Oz appearance
I’m very proud of Perry for his recent appearance on Dr Oz. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights… 1. Dr. Oz declared that Perry is a “world renowned cosmetic chemist.” You can tell because he has a periodic table hanging on the wall in his laboratory.   They featured pictures of THREE of our books. (But I’m still waiting for you people to BUY THEM.) Click here to buy our latest book 3. Perry did a great job of getting the Beauty Brains brand on national TV! But take a closer look at his lab coat…   4. …It says “Complete Cosmetic Chemist Training Program.” WTF? That must...

Why is Macadamia Flawless good for flaky scalp?
Astauff asks…I have some itchy, flaky patches on my scalp that get worse in the winter. Macadamia Flawless is the only thing I’ve used that’s still helped with the problem after more than a couple of uses, even compared to anti-dandruff and prescription shampoos I’ve tried, but $33 for 8 oz is not really in my budget for something I need to buy so often. Is there an ingredient in this that might be helping so I can look for a similar product? The Beauty Brains respond:  This product is essentially a “co-wash” type of cleanser. In other words it’s more like a conditioner than a sha...

Pura d’or Hair Loss Prevention Premium Organic Shampoo: Look at the label
Believe it or not this hair loss prevention shampoo is a top beauty seller on Amazon.com. Let’s look at the label to see if it has a chance in hell of actually preventing hair loss. The good news is the shampoo uses one of the mildest cleansing ingredients you can buy – sodium cocoyl isethionate.  The bad news is it costs $22 for 16 ounces which is expensive. There are other shampoos based on the same ingredient which you can get for much cheaper. More  good news: if you read the claims carefully you’ll see that it really is just a shampoo and not a drug product. More bad news: they throw in all sorts o...

Eden Allure Moroccan Oil Products: In the Beauty Brains Bathroom
Everyone in the Beauty Blog-o-sphere has written about Argan oil. We’ve noted on a number of occasions that most of the Argan oil products we’ve seen (especially the ones for hair) are mostly silicone-based with a only touch of Argan oil thrown in so they can make the claim. But we recently received samples of an Argan oil product that actually contains (are you ready for this?) ONLY PURE ARGAN OIL! The fine folks at Eden Allure sell a 1 ounce bottle of pure Argan oil from Morocco for $18. They also have an Argan oil based soap bar. If you’re tired of products that only contain a minuscule amount of Moroc...

Is moroccan oil good for hair and skin
Barb would like to know…What’s the deal with Moroccan oil? I’ve read all the rave reviews on Amazon.com but I’d like the real scoop from the Beauty Brains.   The Right Brain responds: Actually, Barb, we’ve already answered this question.  Sort of. Moroccan oil = Argan oil? Moroccan oil is another name for Argan oil which is made from the kernels of argan tree fruit that grow almost exclusively in Morocco. You can read our previous post on Argan oil for hair and skin but here’s what you need to know in a nut shell: the oil is a rich emollient that can moisturize hair and skin; it can potentially cause zit...

Is argan oil good for hair and skin
Noelle needs to know: I read your post regarding coconut oil penetrating hair. How about argan oil? It seems to be the new cosmetic hype, with several brands launching their “miraculous” argan oil-based hair treatment for 45 dollars or more.. (Ahem) Is there any kind of research providing evidence that argan oil can restore health and shine to the hair? They say that argan oil has been used for centuries by Moroccan women to restore skin, hair and nails. Does this Moroccan oil really work? The Right Brain’s oily answer: Could argan oil be the new coconut oil? Let’s take a look. What is argan oil? Argan oil is produ...
