Study on breast density notification narratives draws mixed reaction
A recent Australian study criticizing narratives surrounding breast density notification has drawn mixed reactions from radiologists and advocates of breast cancer screening. The study, published February 14 in the British Medical Journal (BMJ), suggested that feminist narratives are being used by companies to influence women’s health. This includes the view that all women undergoing breast cancer screening should be notified of their breast density. The study was led by Tessa Copp, PhD, from the University of Sydney. Radiologists have studied and continue to research how breast density plays into breast cancer risk. P...

Women in the UK ’ s public services repeatedly denied flexible-work requests
Three in ten (30%) women working in schools, hospitals, care homes, town halls, police stations and other key services who have asked to work flexibly have had requests denied, according to a UNISON survey released today (Thursday). The findings – based on responses from just over 44,000 women working in the public sector – suggest employers are being ‘inconsistent, rigid and unimaginative’ by denying individuals the flexibility needed, says UNISON. The survey is released to coincide with the start of the union’s annual women’s conference in Brighton later today. A quarter (25%) of the women who were to...

Functional MRI shows promise for treating chronic severe tinnitus
Real-time functional MRI (fMRI) neurofeedback therapy may be more effective for treating chronic severe tinnitus than cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), researchers have found. The study results are good news for those who suffer from the condition, wrote a group led by Nicolas Gninenko, PhD, of École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne in Switzerland. "[We found that] real-time fMRI neurofeedback therapy led to a greater reduction in tinnitus distress than the current standard treatment of CBT," the investigators reported. Chronic tinnitus is common, but "no evidence-based universal cure exists and currently availab...

Spikes in air pollution may increase suicide risk
A study combining air quality data and suicide reports from across China confirms earlier observations that heavy air pollution from traffic, factories, coal-fired power plants, and home heating can increase the risk of suicide. The study, published today, suggests a Chinese battle plan to clear the air, launched a decade ago, helped prevent some 45,970 suicides from 2013 to 2017. “It’s a well-done study,” says Roger McIntyre, a psychiatrist at the University of Toronto. It’s also the first investigation he knows of that links lower suicide rates to improved air quality. Researchers have long known that...
