Oral iron supplementation: new formulations, old questions
Haematologica. 2024 Apr 11. doi: 10.3324/haematol.2024.284967. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIron deficiency anemia and pre-anemic iron deficiency are the most frequent pathologies. The first line of treatment involves oral iron supplementation. The simplest, least expensive, and most frequently prescribed drug is ferrous sulfate, while other ferrous salts and ferric complexes with polysaccharides or succinylated milk proteins are also widely used. In recent years, novel iron formulations have been developed, such as the lipophilic iron donor ferric maltol, or nanoparticle encapsulated sucrosomial® iron. Oral iron supplem...

Nephrology: What You May Have Missed in 2023
This article highlights a selection of important nephrology studies published in 2023 that have relevance for nonnephrologist physicians. Four studies examined progression of chronic kidney disease or cardiovascular disease with respect to finerenone use, magnesium supplementation, iron markers, and COVID-19. Two studies examined treatments to improve specific aspects of chronic kidney disease management, including daprodustat to address anemia and patiromer to address hyperphosphatemia. One study showed that acetazolamide added to loop diuretics increased diuresis in acute decompensated heart failure across a wide range o...

Factors influencing adherence to iron drop supplementation in infants aged 6 to 24 months: a systematic review of observational studies
This study aims to examine the factors associated with noncompliance (such as non-utilization or inconsistent usage) of iron drop supplementation among infants between 6 and 24 months old.Online databases (PubMed, Scopus and SID) were searched to retrieve relevant articles published from inception up to July 2023. Among the 2,177 articles detected, after removing duplicate and irrelevant titles, 21 cross-sectional studies that met the authors’ inclusion criteria were included. Screening for articles and data extraction were conducted separately by two researchers. The findings suggest that some factors related to mother...

The boon and bane of nitrous oxide
Eur Arch Psychiatry Clin Neurosci. 2024 Apr 13. doi: 10.1007/s00406-024-01801-3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNitrous oxide (N2O) has been known since the end of the eighteenth century. Today, N2O plays a huge role as a greenhouse gas and an ozone-depleting stratospheric molecule. The main sources of anthropogenic N2O emissions are agriculture, fuel combustion, wastewater treatment, and various industrial processes. By contrast, the contribution of medical N2O to the greenhouse effect appears to be small. The recreational and medical uses of N2O gradually diverged over time. N2O has analgesic and anesthetic effects, makin...

Neuropsychiatric disorder as early clinical presentation of marantic endocarditis in patient with newly diagnosed poorly differentiated esophago ‐gastric junction adenocarcinoma: A case report
Transesophageal cardiac echocolor-Doppler: large package of endocardial vegetations encompassing the posterior mitral leaflet, especially at P2-P3 level; similar lesions also at the free edge of the anterior mitral flap in A2. Key Clinical MessageNeuropsychiatric symptoms, depression, and progressive mental confusion should not be overlooked as onset symptoms of multiple cerebral ischemic lesions due to cardiac embolization. Comprehensive clinical evaluation due to progressive anemia led to the diagnosis of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma of the esophagogastric junction as cause of embolizing nonbacterial mitral endoc...

Troponin Elevation in Patients Undergoing Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion for Metastatic Uveal Melanoma
CONCLUSION: Percutaneous Hepatic Perfusion is safe and associated with a transient, asymptomatic troponin elevation peri-operatively without major adverse cardiac events at 90 days. The observed troponin elevation is likely secondary to coronary demand-supply mismatch related to procedural hemodynamic shifts, hypotension, and anemia.PMID:38605434 | DOI:10.1177/10732748241246898 (Source: Cancer Control)

Collage of cases and brief review of the laboratory diagnosis and molecular testing in autoimmune haemolytic anaemia
J Family Med Prim Care. 2024 Feb;13(2):409-416. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2131_22. Epub 2024 Mar 6.ABSTRACTAutoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) is an acquired heterogenous clinical entity with variable presentations like acute haemolysis or mild, chronic haemolysis compounded with acute exacerbation in winters or fatal uncompensated haemolysis. A step-wise approach to the diagnosis and characterisation of AIHA should be undertaken, firstly the diagnosis of haemolysis followed by the establishment of immune nature with the aid of direct agglutination tests (DAT). Simultaneously the other causes of immune haemolysis need to b...

Pre-term labour: A study on evaluation of causes and outcome
CONCLUSION: Pre-maturity is a huge health and financial burden in rural and semi-urban central Gujarat. Pre-mature rupture of membranes, previous MTP, extreme physical activity, and maternal anaemia were the major risk factors linked with pre-term labour. Poor neonatal outcomes like LBW, IUGR, and a low Apgar score were significantly associated with the babies delivered pre-mature in our study.PMID:38605778 | PMC:PMC11006067 | DOI:10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_2411_22 (Source: Primary Care)

QL1604 plus paclitaxel-cisplatin/carboplatin in patients with recurrent or metastatic cervical cancer: an open-label, single-arm, phase II trial
CONCLUSION: QL1604 plus paclitaxel-cisplatin/carboplatin showed promising antitumor activity and manageable safety profile as first-line treatment in patients with advanced cervical cancer. Programmed cell death protein 1 inhibitor plus chemotherapy may be a potential treatment option for the patient population who have contraindications or can't tolerate bevacizumab, which needs to be further verified in phase III confirmatory study. Potential therapeutic options for celiac Disease: An update on Current evidence from Gluten-Free diet to cell therapy
Int Immunopharmacol. 2024 Apr 11;133:112020. doi: 10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112020. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCeliac disease (CD) is a chronic autoimmune enteropathy and multifactorial disease caused by inappropriate immune responses to gluten in the small intestine. Weight loss, anemia, osteoporosis, arthritis, and hepatitis are among the extraintestinal manifestations of active CD. Currently, a strict lifelong gluten-free diet (GFD) is the only safe, effective, and available treatment. Despite the social burden, high expenses, and challenges of following a GFD, 2 to 5 percent of patients do not demonstrate clinical or pa...
