Maternal exposure to zolpidem and risk of specific birth defects
J Sleep Res. 2023 Jun 2:e13958. doi: 10.1111/jsr.13958. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTZolpidem is a non-benzodiazepine agent indicated for treatment of insomnia. While zolpidem crosses the placenta, little is known about its safety in pregnancy. We assessed associations between self-reported zolpidem use 1 month before pregnancy through to the end of the third month ("early pregnancy") and specific birth defects using data from two multi-site case-control studies: National Birth Defects Prevention Study and Slone Epidemiology Center Birth Defects Study. Analysis included 39,711 birth defect cases and 23,035 controls withou...

Prevalence of Beckwith Wiedemann Syndrome and Risk of Embryonal Tumors in Children Born with Omphalocele
Children with omphalocele have an increased prevalence of Beckwith Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and thus a suspected increased risk of developing embryonal tumors, e.g. Wilms tumor, hepatoblastoma, neuroblastoma and rhabdomyosarcoma. The aim of this study was to examine the prevalence of BWS and the risk of embryonal tumors amongst patients born with omphalocele. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Surgery)

Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex
Exstrophy-epispadias complex encompasses a spectrum of disorders with lower abdominal midline malformations, including epispadias, bladder exstrophy, and cloacal exstrophy, also known as Omphalocele –Exstrophy–Imperforate Anus–Spinal Anomalies Complex. In this review, the authors discuss the epidemiology, embryologic cause, prenatal findings, phenotypic characteristics, and management strategies of these 3 conditions. The primary focus is to summarize outcomes pertaining to each condition . (Source: Urologic Clinics of North America)

Retrospective review of antimicrobial use for gastroschisis patients in Kigali, Rwanda: can improved stewardship reduce late inpatient deaths?
Conclusion: We identified frequent late deaths, prolonged antibiotic courses, and regular use of second-line antibiotic agents in this retrospective cohort of Rwandan gastroschisis patients. Future studies are needed to evaluate antimicrobial resistance in pediatric surgical patients in Rwanda. What is Known:• Global disparities in gastroschisis outcomes are extreme, with<4% mortality in high-income settings and 75-100% mortality in low-income settings.• Antimicrobial surveillance data is sparse across Africa, but existing evidence suggests high levels of resistance to first-line antibiotics in Rwanda. What is New:•...

A Case of Intra-Amniotic Umbilical Vein Varices Misdiagnosed as an Omphalocele
Conclusion: Large intra-amniotic umbilical vein varices can be clinically misdiagnosed as an omphalocele. Their resection near the level of the fascia, as with normal umbilical veins, could be a better management with a better prognosis.PMID:37071768 | DOI:10.1080/15513815.2023.2201626 (Source: Fetal and Pediatric Pathology)
