The gut microbiota: stable bioreactor of variable composition?

Trends Endocrinol Metab. 2022 May 16:S1043-2760(22)00062-5. doi: 10.1016/j.tem.2022.04.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe gut microbiota plays a crucial role in host health, providing energy and vitamins from food undigested by the gut enzymes of the host. Bacterial metabolites, such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), are essentially metabolized by the gut mucosa. The importance to metabolic health of gut microbiota composition versus function is discussed.PMID:35584972 | DOI:10.1016/j.tem.2022.04.005
