Asymptomatic carotid atherosclerosis stenosis, inflammation, and cognitive impairment

It is well-established that atherosclerosis is a systemic inflammatory process involving the vessel wall intima media complex.1 Systemic inflammation is also thought to be involved in aging related cognitive decline.2 In addition, numerous studies have demonstrated a strong association between subclinical arteriosclerosis as measured by carotid artery intimal media thickness and cognitive impairment.3
