Transfusion in Older Anemic Patients: Should the Troponin Value Be Taken Into Account?

Transfusion of red blood cells is part of the therapeutic arsenal for anemia, which is very frequent in the elderly. The prevalence of anemia can be as high as 60% in acute geriatric departments,1 and the condition has a heavy burden considering that it is associated with increased mortality and decreased functional and cognitive status.2 The current recommendations for chronic anemia include transfusion thresholds of 7 g/dL in the absence of cardiovascular disease, and 8 g/dL for patients with cardiovascular disease.
