A Quality Initiative Incorporating Tablet Technology to Facilitate Nonpharmacologic Pain Intervention Use in the Hospital
Nonpharmacological pain interventions (NPIs) help alleviate pain, increase patient self-control, and minimize drug side effects (Haun et al., 2019; Tick et al., 2018). Many Americans, including health care professionals, are enculturated to believe that opioid analgesics are the mainstay for treating all pain syndromes. This is reflected by the International Narcotics Control Board's identification of the U.S. as the highest global consumer of prescription opioids (INCB, 2018). Although opioids effectively treat acute pain, they have limited efficacy and high abuse potential when used chronically (Tajerian& Clark, 2017).
