Left-Sided MRSA Endocarditis Successfully Treated with a Combination of Daptomycin and Ceftaroline

Vancomycin is the recommended drug for treating endocarditis caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Daptomycin is not inferior to vancomycin for treating MRSA bacteremia and right-sided endocarditis. There is synergistic activity between daptomycin and ceftaroline. Fifty percent of all cases of bacterial endocarditis are caused by S. aureus, half of which are caused by methicillin-resistant strains (1). A retrospective review of 133 cases of S. aureus endocarditis indicated an overall mortality rate of 38% for left-sided endocarditis in comparison to 17% for right-sided endocarditis (2).
