Evolution of Emergency Department Characteristics in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry: A Retrospective Review over Two Decades

Conclusions: From 1996 to 2014, there was a significant increase in emergency admissions. The results also indicate that more complex disease situations and less favorable psychosocial conditions are occurring. The findings underscore the need to improve the clinical care of children and adolescents during acute mental health crises and work toward their prevention. There is also a need to focus broad societal discussion on improving overall mental health during childhood development. There is an urgent need for prospective studies to identify the factors leading to the increase in emergency admissions among children and adolescents.PMID:35225683 | DOI:10.1024/1422-4917/a000859
