Bowel Injury in Laparoscopic Gynaecological Surgery; 19 Medicolegal Cases

Bowel injury is an inherent risk of any gynecological surgery. A review of 10,375 gynecological laparotomic, laparoscopic or vaginal operations reported total bowel injury rates of 2.51%, 0.35%, and 1.14%, respectively. When injuries were categorized into entry- and non-entry-related, the rates of entry-related were 0.84% (48/5700), 0.30% (11/3710), 0.73% (7/967), respectively [1]. Molloy et al, reported laparoscopic bowel injury rate of 1 per 1000 (0.10%) [2] while Llarema et al reported 1 in 769 (0.13%) laparoscopic operations [3].
