Comment on: Factors affecting relapse of type 2 diabetes after bariatric surgery in Sweden 2007 – 2015: A registry-based cohort study.
There is perhaps no disease that is as chronically and systematically undertreated as obesity. Despite being a leading cause of preventable mortality, there remains significant stigma around obesity treatment. Bariatric surgery is therefore often viewed as a last resort for patients who have failed every other weight loss strategy available. Unfortunately, this treatment strategy has significant consequences: fewer than 1% of patients ever undergo bariatric surgery,1 and among those who do many spend years of their life suffering from obesity-associated comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes (T2DM).
