Issue Highlights

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory disease of unknown cause characterized by mucosal inflammation of colon and rectum. Goal of treatment is to reduce mucosal inflammation and to prevent disability, colectomy and colorectal cancer. Aminosalicylates, corticosteroids and thiopurines alone or in combination are established as initial therapies. In recent years various biologicals extended the therapeutic armamentarium in particular for patients refractory or intolerant to conventional therapies or having more severe disease.
