The international community must stand with the people of Sudan

Today, UNISON’s international committee issued the following statement: UNISON condemns the military coup in Sudan and stands in solidarity with the trade union movement and all those demanding democracy, justice and rights. We note that trade unions and civil society in Sudan have firmly rejected the political agreement between General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and continue to demand an end to military rule. The international community must stand with the Sudanese people and respond to their genuine concerns that the new agreement will further consolidate the military’s control over the fragile transitional process. Since 25 October, the military regime has placed the prime minister under house arrest for weeks and arrested and detained other civilian members of the cabinet and civil society leaders who have opposed the illegitimate coup. They have used excessive force against protestors, killing more than 40 and injuring hundreds who have courageously sought to defend the 2019 revolution and the transition to democracy.  The trade union movement in Sudan continues to play a leading role in opposition to the military coup, and we urge the international community, in particular the UK government as the UN Penholder on Sudan, to take action and support their demands for: An immediate end to the military coup, and for those who have led the coup to be held to account;  The immediate release of civilian and civil society leaders; An e...
