Once vitreous loss is identified, procedural guidelines advise that PEA be ceased and the probe carefully withdrawn to minimize traction on the vitreous. The Bimanual-bipedal technique described in this paper holds the PEA probe in place and inserts the vitrectomy cutter through the pars plana port with the other hand. Following removal of vitreous around the PEA tip, the vitrectomy cutter is switched to a cutting rate of...

CONCLUSIONS: Adopting a set of four temporary OR protocols that are often mandatory in the Western world did not reduce the POE rate. Along with previously published studies, these results challenge the necessity of these common practices which may be needlessly costly and wasteful, arguing for the reevaluation of empiric and potentially unnecessary guidelines that govern ophthalmic surgeries.PMID:35017161 | DOI:10.1136/bjophthalmol-2021-320506
