Limitations in Research on Maintenance Treatment for Individuals With Schizophrenia

To the Editor Relapse prevention is paramount in managing schizophrenia. Leucht et al conducted a meta-analysis of randomized clinical trials comparing the association between different antipsychotic maintenance doses and risk of relapse and rehospitalization in individuals with schizophrenia by generating efficacy-related dose-response curves. Prevention of relapse and rehospitalization increased with up to 5 mg/d risperidone equivalent. Higher doses conferred little further advantage for reducing relapse or rehospitalization, but were associated with higher intolerability-related dropout rates.
