Achilles tendon rupture: A conservative management pathway

Purpose: Despite evidence that dictates that careful and selected conservative management offers an effective alternative to surgery in both the general and sporting population, 23/61 patients had surgery for Achilles tendon ruptures at St Georges Hospital between December 2017 and December 2018. Furthermore, clinical decision for surgery was dependent on the surgeon who consulted and what activity the patient wanted to get back to doing. Consultants would also give varying guidance of immobilisation spanning from 6 weeks to 15 weeks with some offering follow-ups weekly for wedge removal and in some cases, no follow ups were offered at all.
