Cardiovascular diseases, namely coronary artery disease and heart failure, continue to be the leading cause of morbidity, mortality, and hospitalizations in the United States (US) as well as worldwide.1,2 The prevalence of these illnesses has increased over the decades as has the overall economic burden faced by the healthcare system.2,3 This cost not only includes the direct monetary costs of hospitalizations, re-admissions, procedures, and medications, but also indirect costs in the form of health-related quality of life and lost productivity.
