Granuloma formation after peritoneal dialysis catheter –related infection by Mycobacterium chelonae

A 46-year-old man with end-stage kidney failure that had been treated with peritoneal dialysis for 5 years was suffering from a tunnel infection. The peritoneal dialysis catheter was removed, and he was converted to hemodialysis. The pathogen obtained from a culture of the outer cuff turned out to be Mycobacterium chelonae. One month after catheter removal, the local infection recurred, and debridement was performed to control infection. Cord-like material was extracted (Figure  1a), and the pathology showed granuloma with multinucleated giant cells in the dermis and subcutaneous fat (Figure 1b).
