Severe COVID-19 is associated with hyperactivation of the alternative complement pathway

We show that activation of the alternative complement pathway characterizes COVID-19 severity. Specifically, low properdin levels were associated with use of mechanical ventilation. This work provides a rationale for the specific inhibition of the alternative complement pathway.
