Potential impact of national recommendations to use short course antibiotic therapy on antibiotic use in the emergency department of a UK hospital: retrospective observational study

Study of 1215 days of antibiotic therapy in 365 patients in the emergency department found 16% of days were excess prescribing owing to inappropriate protracted prescribing. 79% of defined daily doses of antibiotics for treatment of upper RTI were classed as excess prescribing.
