Differences in Inflammation, Treatment and Outcomes between Black and non-Black Patients Hospitalized for COVID-19: A Prospective Cohort Study

The Coronavirus 19 Disease (COVID-19) pandemic has disproportionately affected minorities in the United States1,2. The prevalence of COVID-19 is higher in Black patients relative to other racial groups3, and Black patients have a higher prevalence of risk factors for severe COVID-19, including obesity, hypertension, diabetes mellitus and kidney disease compared to non-Black patients.4,5,6,7 However, reports on the association between Black race and worse COVID-19 outcomes have been discrepant. Nationwide data suggest Black patients account for a higher percentage of deaths relative to their representation in the general population8.
