Disparities in rectal cancer care: A call to action for all
Rectal cancer treatment has evolved over the last few decades and has become more intricate and personalized, with multiple options for neoadjuvant therapy and complex technique-dependent surgeries. As a result, there is significant variation in rectal cancer outcomes across the United States.1 In a landmark paper, Monson et al. reported that hospitals with low volumes of rectal cancer were significantly less likely to follow current treatment guidelines for their patients.2 As is seen in other complex malignancies, centers treating a high volume of rectal cancer have improved outcomes, both in terms of surgical complications and also oncologic results.
