The impact of atrial fibrillation on outcomes of peripheral arterial disease: analysis of routinely collected primary care data

Peripheral arterial disease is a major health problem associated with functional decline1 and more than double risk of overall mortality, cardiovascular mortality, major coronary events and cerebrovascular events.2,3 Proactive surveillance of peripheral arterial disease patients and recognition of potential risk factors for these adverse outcomes is of paramount importance. The prevalence of atrial fibrillation in peripheral arterial disease patients is high, ranging from 8% to 17.9% in different cohorts.
