Investigations of Staphylococcal contamination on environmental surfaces of a neonatal intensive care unit of a children's hospital

Viable Staphylococci were found on 54% of NICU surfaces sampled. • Mannitol-negative Staphylococci were dominant type of Staphylococci found. • MRSA was the lowest percentage of Staphylococci, found on 11% of sites. • Greatest NICU presence of Staphylococci found on floors and return air ducts. • Contamination of floors and return air ducts could serve as a pathogen reservoir. Staphylococci species are known to cause healthcare-associated infections in neonatal intensive care (NICU) unit patients. Little is known about Staphylococcal contamination of NICU environments. Swabs from 25 of 46 (54%) surfaces sampled in a NICU had viable Staphylococcal co ntamination, with 11% contaminated by methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus [MRSA]. Floors by sinks and return air ducts in the NICU were the most contaminated (67% positive), possibly serving as reservoirs for Staphylococci.

ConclusionsOur meta-analysis did not show any beneficial effects from IPC interventions on MRSA reductions in LTCFs. Our findings highlight that the effectiveness of interventions in these facilities is likely conditional on resource availability —particularly decolonization and barrier precautions, due to their potential adverse events and uncertain effectiveness. Hence, administrative engagement is crucial for all effective IPC programmes. LTCFs should consider a pragmatic approach to reinforce standard precautions as routine practice an d implement barrier precautions and decolonization to outbreak responses only.

CONCLUSION: The excellent activity of ceftobiprole against MRSA would have major implications in management of the patients with serious infections, as an empirical treatment or alternative to vancomycin. In conclusion, Tys inhibits lung EC barrier disruption and proinflammatory signaling induced by MRSA in vitro and attenuates acute lung injury induced by MRSA in vivo. In this study, aiming at developing novel and more effective agents, a series of fascaplysin derivatives and their corresponding β-carboline precursors have been synthesized. Then their antibacterial/antibiofilm activity and mechanisms against MRSA were investigated for the first time.
