We report two VL cases with atypical localizations not reported from east Africa before, both diagnosed and treated at the Leishmaniasis Research and Treatment Center, Gondar, Ethiopia. We report a new case of cutaneous leishmaniosis caused by Leishmania (Mundinia) martiniquensis in a horse in Florida, USA. A 10-year-old neutered male Quarter horse was presented with multifocal to coalescing, raised, ulcerated and oozing, non-healing wounds on both pinnae of several weeks' duration. ConclusionsThe high frequency ofL.braziliensis infection in dogs with ulcers and the similarities between the isolates ofL.braziliensis and cutaneous leishmaniasis in dogs and humans in an endemic area of TL, raise the possibility of an important role of dogs in the transmission chain ofL.braziliensis.

Background: Visceral (VL) and cutaneous (CL) leishmaniasis are seen in Turkey endemically and CL caused by Leishmania tropica is an important public health problem in southeastern as well as other regions of Turkey. The diagnosis has been usually made by clinical view of lesion and/or parasitological using lesion aspiration smears. Histological examination does not, however, always reveal the parasite in the skin biopsy, particularly in chronic lesions. Besides this, due to CL infections caused by different species in endemic areas, diagnostic methods enabling species identification are in great need.

This study describes the histopathological characteristics found in the skin lesions of patients with CL caused by Leishmania (V.) panamensis in Panama. We analyzed 49 skin biopsy samples from patients with clinical suspicion of CL, by molecular tests (PCR for subgenus Viannia and HSP-70) and by Hematoxylin-Eosin staining.
