Primary or adjuvant chemoradiotherapy for cervical cancer with intraoperative lymph node metastasis – a review

With 570,000 cases and 311,000 deaths yearly, cervical cancer currently ranks fourth in cancer incidence and mortality [1]. Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy is the standard treatment for clinically visible early-stage disease and chemoradiotherapy for more advanced stages. Upon intraoperative discovery of lymph node metastasis, the gynaecologist may pursue one of two treatment strategies. Abandonment of radical hysterectomy followed by primary (chemo)radiotherapy (PRT), is currently recommended by international guidelines [2,3].
