This study highlights a novel finding that ENDS use could have serious implications on men’s se xual health.”El-Shahawy and colleagues analyzed data collected from December 2016 to January 2018 as part of thePopulation Assessment of Tobacco or Health (PATH) study —a national longitudinal study of tobacco use and how it affects the health of people in the United States. The researchers specifically focused on male participants 20 years and older who responded to questions about erectile dysfunction; their use of ENDS; current or past history of smoking; and previous diagnoses of diabetes, hypertension, hig...

Puerarin, an isoflavone glycoside derived from Pueraria lobata (Willd.) Ohwi, has been identified as a pharmacologically active component with diverse benefits. A large number of experimental and clinical studies have demonstrated that puerarin is widely used in the treatment of a variety of diseases. Among them, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death in the world, and therefore remain one of the most prominent global public health concerns. In this review, we systematically analyze the preclinical investigations of puerarin in CVDs, such as atherosclerosis, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, diabet...

Very few studies evaluated the impact of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD) on heart failure (HF) hospitalization risk following an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). For this retrospective cohort analysis, we identified adult AMI survivors from January to June 2014 from the United States Nationwide Readmissions Database. Outcomes were a 6-month HF, fatal HF, composite of HF during the AMI or a 6-month HF, and a composite of 6-month HF or death during a non –HF-related admission.

Chris EdwardsThe main weapons against COVID-19 are the vaccines developed by Moderna and BioNTech after a decade of their research into mRNA technologies. That research was supported by more than $3 billion of private angel investment and venture capital.Democrats and Republicans both support medical research funding, and Republicans tout the Trump administration ’s Operation Warp Speed. But governments were not the key to mRNA development. Instead, we can thank the leaders and scientists at Moderna and BioNTech and the suppliers of private capital to them, as I discusshere andhere.TheWall Street Journal &r...

The aging of the immune system isn't just a matter of becoming vulnerable to commonplace infectious diseases, such as influenza. The immune system also removes senescent cells and cancerous cells, both of which present sizable risks to health in later life. Additionally, immune cells participate in normal tissue maintenance in a variety of ways. Further, the chronic inflammation characteristic of an aged immune system disrupts the normal function of many types of cell and tissue, contributing to a diverse range of age-related conditions. For most people, cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an apparently innocuous persistent he...

CONCLUSIONS: The long-term mortality of HF patients with cancer was higher than that of HF patients without cancer. Malnutrition was associated with long-term mortality, independently of the presence of cancer. Multidisciplinary treatment is needed when treating HF patients with cancer.PMID:34865821 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2021.08.027
