Employment of patients with kidney failure treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation —a systematic review and meta-analysis

Patients with kidney failure treated with dialysis or kidney transplantation experience difficulties maintaining employment due to the condition itself and the treatment. We aimed to establish the rate of empl...

In this commentary, scientists note the paucity of funding for chronic kidney disease research, given the widespread suffering and death caused by this presently incurable condition. This and many other areas of medicine are seen as solved problems by the powers that be simply because there is some form of treatment, even palliative treatment, in widespread use. That the treatment does little and many people die doesn't appear to motivate those who could fund progress. There is no sense of urgency and little sense of need. We might make the same comments in the case of atherosclerosis, a condition many consider to be adequ...

Nephropathic cystinosis (NC) is a rare autosomal recessive disease, which causes cysteine-crystals accumulation with progression to end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Von willebrand disease (VWD) type III is a rare subtype of von willebrand factor (VWF) abnormality, which is characterized by severe reduction of VWF and factor VIII activity. A 16-year-old patient with NC and VWD type III presented with uremic symptoms due to ESRD. Dialysis access was inserted and followed by hemodialysis (HD) for 4 months with a proper infusion of blood products. While renal transplant remains the treatment of choice of NC and superior to chro...

Conclusion: This is the largest cohort study of ON not due to PH. Histologic features differ in patients with enteric versus nonenteric risks. Patients in the enteric group are more likely to have baseline CKD and significant IFTA, while patients in the nonenteric group were more likely to have a greater number of tubules with CaOx crystals and corresponding interstitial inflammation. AKI requiring dialysis at the time of diagnosis was the single most significant predictor of adverse renal outcome.Am J Nephrol

Immunosuppression (IS) is considered a risk factor for severe COVID-19. It remains unclear if solid organ transplantation (SOT) affects its presentation or outcome. We aimed to describe the clinical course of SOT recipients hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 in the Infectious Diseases Department from March 2020 to January 2021 were reviewed, and SOT recipients were selected. Seventeen patients (pts) were included, 13 of which were male, with a median age of 58 years. Transplanted organs were kidney (n=11, of which 2 were kidney-pancreas), liver (n=4), and lung (n=2). Mean post-transp...

In this study, we profiled gene expression in the developing mouse kidney at embryonic day 14.5 at single cell resolution. Consistent with previous studies, clusters with distinct transcriptional signatures clearly identify major compartments and cell types of the developing kidney. Cell cycle activity distinguishes between the “primed” and “self-renewing” sub-populations of nephron progenitors, with increased expression of the cell cycle related genes Birc5, Cdca3, Smc2 and Smc4 in “primed” nephron progenitors. Augmented Birc5 expression was also detected in immature distal tubules and ...

We retrospectively analyzed the clinical and laboratory indices, treatment response, and the final renal function. The final renal function was defined by the last stable level of eGFR measured in an out-patient department more than 3 times before death occurred and was categorized into five groups dependi...
