Demographic and clinical factors are associated with frequent short-notice cancellations in Veterans with multiple sclerosis on disease modifying therapies

It is estimated that yearly, the United States healthcare system loses $150 billion due to missed appointments or “no shows”1. This number does not factor in cancelled appointments, which can also cause a loss of revenue when done on short notice (e.g., less than 24-hour notice). Cancellations often occur more frequently than no shows2-5. Both types of appointment non-attendance can cause disruptions in pat ients’ healthcare services, including delays in when they can see their provider, and may result in worse healthcare outcomes3.
