Cytokine Drizzle—The Rationale for Abandoning “Cytokine Storm”

Conclusion: The misleading term “cytokine storm” implies increased blood levels of cytokines are responsible for a grave clinical condition. Not all inflammatory conditions resulting in worsened disease states are correlated with significantly elevated cytokine levels, despite an association with the term “cytokine storm”. “Cytokine storm” should be removed from the medical lexicon since it does not reflect the mediators driving the disease nor does it predict which diseases will respond to cytokine inhibitors.

That research was supported by more than $3 billion of private angel investment and venture capital.Democrats and Republicans both support medical research funding, and Republicans tout the Trump administration ’s Operation Warp Speed. But governments were not the key to mRNA development. Instead, we can thank the leaders and scientists at Moderna and BioNTech and the suppliers of private capital to them, as I discusshere andhere.TheWall Street Journal &r...

The aging of the immune system isn't just a matter of becoming vulnerable to commonplace infectious diseases, such as influenza. The immune system also removes senescent cells and cancerous cells, both of which present sizable risks to health in later life. Additionally, immune cells participate in normal tissue maintenance in a variety of ways. Further, the chronic inflammation characteristic of an aged immune system disrupts the normal function of many types of cell and tissue, contributing to a diverse range of age-related conditions. For most people, cytomegalovirus (CMV) is an apparently innocuous persistent he...

This study was undertaken to assess humoral immune and cellular responses to the BNT162b2 messenger RNA (mRNA) COVID-19 vaccination in CLL. Methods: The presence of the spike antibodies was assessed at a median time of 14 days from the second vaccine dose of SARS-CoV2 in 70 CLL followed-up at a single institution. Results: The antibody response rate (RR) in CLL patients was 58.5%, compared to 100% of 57 healthy controls of the same sex and age (P

On 26 November, WHO's Technical Advisory Group on SARS-CoV-2 Virus Evolution (TAG-VE) designated the B.1.1.529 variant, first reported by South Africa 2 days earlier, as a variant of concern, named Omicron. Omicron is a variant of concern because it has dozens of mutations that can affect the way it behaves. Due to this mutation profile, it needs to be further investigated for its potential impacts.
