U.S. Task Force Reconsiders Daily Low-Dose Aspirin Use for Preventing Heart Attacks in Adults Over 60

Older adults without heart disease shouldn’t take daily low-dose aspirin to prevent a first heart attack or stroke, an influential health guidelines group said in preliminary updated advice released Tuesday. Bleeding risks for adults in their 60s and up who haven’t had a heart attack or stroke outweigh any potential benefits from aspirin, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force said in its draft guidance. For the first time, the panel said there may be a small benefit for adults in their 40s who have no bleeding risks. For those in their 50s, the panel softened advice and said evidence of benefit is less clear. [time-brightcove not-tgx=”true”] The recommendations are meant for people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity or other conditions that increase their chances for a heart attack or stroke. Regardless of age, adults should talk with their doctors about stopping or starting aspirin to make sure it’s the right choice for them, said task force member Dr. John Wong, a primary-care expert at Tufts Medical Center. “Aspirin use can cause serious harms, and risk increases with age,’’ he said. If finalized, the advice for older adults would backtrack on recommendations the panel issued in 2016 for helping prevent a first heart attack and stroke, but it would be in line with more recent guidelines from other medical groups. Doctors have long recommended daily low-dose aspirin for many patients who already have had a h...

I’m in the northeast, and it’s becoming a pain in the a** to eat anywhere. Everywhere is full, have to book a reservation way ahead to get anything. Many restaraunts have started to hold a credit card on file for reservation and charge fees for cancelation, seems to have made it better. Is this how it was pretty pandemic, I can’t remember? Is it this annoying other parts of the country? I will also add, I only sit down at a restaraunt with my spouse maybe once or twice a month.

A rush of vaccine-seeking customers and staff shortages are squeezing drugstores around the U.S., leading to frazzled workers and temporary pharmacy closures. Drugstores are normally busy this time of year with flu shots and other vaccines, but now pharmacists are doling out a growing number of COVID-19 shots and giving coronavirus tests. The push for shots is expected to grow more intense as President Joe Biden urges vaccinated Americans to get booster shots to combat the emerging omicron variant. The White House said Thursday that more than two in three COVID-19 vaccinations are happening at local pharmacies. And pharmac...

Propose of review To summarize the evidence that suggests that osteoarthritis (OA) is a mitochondrial disease. Recent findings Mitochondrial dysfunction together with mtDNA damage could contribute to cartilage degradation via several processes such as: (1) increased apoptosis; (2) decreased autophagy; (3) enhanced inflammatory response; (4) telomere shortening and increased senescence chondrocytes; (5) decreased mitochondrial biogenesis and mitophagy; (6) increased cartilage catabolism; (7) increased mitochondrial fusion leading to further reactive oxygen species production; and (8) impaired metabolic flexibilit...

Purpose of review To review the recent literature on bone in osteoarthritis (OA), with a focus on imaging and intervention studies Recent findings Most studies focused on knee OA; hip and hand studies were uncommon. Bone shape studies demonstrated that shape changes precede radiographic OA, predict joint replacement, and have demonstrated high responsiveness. Novel quantitative 3D imaging markers (B-score) have better characterized OA severity, including preradiographic OA status. The addition of computerized tomography-derived 3D metrics has improved the prediction of hip joint replacement when compared to radi...

The Critical Care Resource Nurse Team (CCRNT) evolved from our traditional Rapid Response Team (RRT). The CCRNT is a unique paradigm created using the conceptual framework of the American Association of Critical Care Nursing Synergy Model for Patient Care. The goal of the CCRNT is to help align nurse competencies with patient needs. This team was seen as a much-needed strong clinical support by nursing leadership as large numbers of inexperienced new graduate registered nurses were hired and senior experienced nurses were leaving the workforce. The CCRNT supports 24/7 RRT, Code Blue, Code Stroke, Emergency Airway Response ...
