Development and Initial Evaluation of Psychometric Properties of a Pain Competence Assessment Tool (PCAT)

Chronic pain (CP) is a serious condition affecting at least 10 percent of the world's population with prevalence closer to 20-25 percent in Canada and the United States [32; 39; 46]. Unlike acute pain, CP is commonly associated with functional disability, emotional distress, sleep, and financial problems [41]. In addition, chronic pain has been the key driver for opioid prescription and a major contributor to the opioid crisis [44; 54]. Despite significant advances in pain research, the management of CP remains a challenge, especially in primary care settings [25].
