Does ComPsych Communication Skills Training Alter Trainee Self-Efficacy?

CONCLUSIONS: Following ComPsych training, trainees were more confident discussing information about schizophrenia with patients and their families/carers and were more able to critically evaluate their own communication skills: an important feature of good clinical acumen. These subjective ratings provide important self-efficacy information, including the benefits perceived and evidence of the program's feasibility and utility.PMID:34553322 | DOI:10.1007/s40596-021-01517-9

Conclusions: The increased interest in personalized medicine and data-driven disease subtyping also extends to psychiatric disorders. However, to date, this subfield is at an incipient exploratory stage, and all retrieved studies were mostly proofs of principle where further validation and increased sample sizes are craved for. Whereas results for all explored diseases are inconsistent, we believe this reflects the need for concerted, multisite data collection efforts with a strong focus on measuring the generalizability of results. Finally, whereas functional MRI is the best way of measuring brain function available to da...

Conclusion: While the prevalence of problematic drug use in this sample population is relatively lower compared to other countries, there is a considerable number who might be at risk. Routine screening and close monitoring of drug use is recommended as part of psychiatric assessment, particularly among males and patients with nicotine dependence.

Exposure to childhood trauma is a well-known risk factor for severe mental disorders including schizophrenia and other non-affective psychoses. Beyond childhood trauma, there is increasing evidence that bullying, social exclusion, and discrimination during adolescence and adulthood may increase the risk of developing a psychotic disorder, and that such forms of traumatization may also underlie the elevated psychosis risk among migrants or persons with a visible minority status. In this umbrella review, we systematically assess meta-analyses regarding trauma and social adversity. A systematic literature review yielded 11 me...

Scientists have long understood that the region of the brain called the hippocampus is important for memory, learning and navigation. Now, scientists in a UCLA lab led by neurophysicist Mayank Mehta are gaining a deeper understanding of how the hippocampus works on a circuit level — that is, functions involving networks of millions of neurons. That knowledge could be an important step toward the development of treatments for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia and epilepsy, all of which are related to dysfunction in the hippocampus. In their latest study, published in the journal Nat...

CONCLUSIONS: Catatonic schizophrenia is associated with dysregulation of the connectivity in specific motoric brain regions and corresponding circuits. Future DTI studies are needed to address the neural correlates of motor abnormalities in schizophrenia-related catatonia during the acute and remitted state of the illness to identify the specific pathophysiology of this disorder.PMID:34672443

This study aims to investigate changes in medical utilization and comorbidities before and after a diagnosis of methamphetamine use disorder.METHODS: A total of 3321 cases (79% were male) of methamphetamine use disorder between January 1, 1996, and December 31, 2012, were identified from Psychiatric Inpatient Medical Claims database in Taiwan. Information was collected on demographics, diagnoses, and medical utilizations. The date of newly diagnosed with methamphetamine use disorder was defined as the baseline. Mirror-image study design was used to compare changes in medical utilization and comorbidities between the pre-ba...

Introduction: Cognitive decline is the core schizophrenia symptom, which is now well accepted. Holding a role in various aspects of cognition, lentiform nucleus (putamen and globus pallidus) dysfunction contributes to the psychopathology of this disease. However, the effects of lentiform nucleus function on cognitive impairments in schizophrenia are yet to be investigated. Objectives: We aim to detect the fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (fALFF) alterations in patients with schizophrenia, and examine how their behavior correlates in relation to the cognitive impairments of the patients. Methods: All particip...
