Genes, Vol. 12, Pages 1482: Suicide Related Phenotypes in a Bipolar Sample: Genetic Underpinnings Genes doi: 10.3390/genes12101482 Authors: Line K. M. Lybech Marco Calabró Silvana Briuglia Antonio Drago Concetta Crisafulli Suicide in Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a relevant clinical concern. Genetics may shape the individual risk for suicide behavior in BD, together with known clinical factors. The lack of consistent replication in BD may be associated with its multigenetic component. In the present contribution we analyzed a sample of BD individuals (from STEP-BD database) to identify the genetic variants potentially associated with three different suicide-related phenotypes: 1) a feeling that the life was not worth living; 2) fantasies about committing a violent suicide; 3) previous attempted suicide. The sample under analysis included 1115 BD individuals. None of the SNPs reached genome-wide significance. However, a trend of association was evidenced for rs2767403, an intron variant of AOPEP gene, in association with phenotype #1 (p = 5.977 × 10−6). The molecular pathway analysis showed a significant enrichment in all the investigated phenotypes on pathways related to post synaptic signaling, neurotransmission and neurodevelopment. Further, NOTCH signaling or the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) -ergic signaling were found to be associated with specific suicide-related phenotypes. The present investigation contributes to the hypothesis that th...

Conclusion: Only limited results were found regarding effects of a past suicide attempt on response times to emotional and suicide-related words, but there was an overall effect of major depression on slower response time. Protective genetic effects of the rs211034 A allele on this slowing were eliminated in those with a history of sexual abuse during childhood. Further research is needed to better characterize the mechanisms underlying the effects of childhood trauma on these genetic effects.

It is frequently complicated by suicidal behaviors, and patients with BD are among those at higher risk of suicide. The aims of our study were to evaluate the predictive factors of suicidal behaviors in patients with BD type 1, through the assessment of their socio-demographic, clinical and evolutionary characteristics as well as to study the implications of the childhood traumas and impulsivity as predictive factors for suici...

A total of 1673 bipolar patients from different psychiatric departments were compared according to the lifetime presence of suicide attempts on demographic/clinical variables. Owing to the large number of variables statistically related to the dependent variable (presence of suicide attempts) at the univariate analyses, preliminary multiple logistic regression analyses...

Turk Psikiyatri Derg. 2021 Fall;32(3):214-218.ABSTRACTBiological, genetic and psychosocial factors may play a role in the aetiology of bipolar mood disorder (BPD). BPD episodes might be triggered by isotretinoin, a retinoid derivative of vitamin A with a role in cellular proliferation and differentiation. Due to its association with depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts, American Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a placement of a label warning for isotretionin. Personal or family history of psychiatric disorders was emphasized in the literature for the risk of mood episodes following isotretionin treat...

AbstractIntroductionEarly-stage predictors of illness course are needed in bipolar disorder (BD). Differences among patients with a first depressive versus maniac/hypomanic episode have been stated, although in most studies, memory bias and time from onset to start of specialized treatment might interfere. The aim was to compare the first 10 years of illness course according to polarity at onset.Methods49 type I BD patients admitted for treatment for a first-time affective episode and a following 10-year attendance to the institution were included. A retrospective year by year comparison according to polarity at onset (dep...

Mol Med Rep. 2021 Dec;24(6):839. doi: 10.3892/mmr.2021.12479. Epub 2021 Oct 11.ABSTRACTThe present study aimed to review major depression, including its types, epidemiology, association with different diseases status and treatments, as well as its correlation with the current COVID-19 pandemic. Mental depression is a common disorder that affects most individuals at one time or another. During depression, there are changes in mood and behavior, accompanied by feelings of defeat, hopelessness, or even suicidal thoughts. Depression has a direct or indirect relation with a number of other diseases including Alzheimer's disease...
