Informed Decision-Making: Knowing Is Not the Same as Doing

Even when the knowledge exists that something should be done, there is not always proper follow-through. Surgical conversations are fraught with inadequate discourse on key points to appropriately inform and involve patients. Long and colleagues1 skillfully crafted a quantitative system to assess and score the ability of surgeons to cover elements of informed consent, as guided by the American College of Surgeons ’ definitions, and elements of informed decision-making, using a pre-existing validated scale.
