Do nurses ’ opinions matter?

We have reflected on occasion in this column on the lofty regard in which nurses are held by the people we serve.1 Over time, nursing evolves and improves, and we manage not only to live up to our contract with society but also to have society acknowledge our work and to let us know that they approve. Additionally, panels of experts have recognized that nurses hold the key to meeting the health care needs of society as we move into the future.2 One might think that, with 20 million nurses in the world,3 there would be ample opportunity for things to go wrong.
