Issue Highlights

The risk of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) within families continues to be elucidated, and data are lacking on this topic in Asian countries. In this issue of Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, Kim and colleagues1 conducted a retrospective cohort study within the South Korea National Health Insurance Database, from 2002-2017. This data source is derived from the universal health system in South Korea, is population-based, and specifically includes family history information. From a cohort of nearly 22 million individuals, the investigators identified 45,717 with ulcerative colitis and 17,848 with Crohn ’s disease (CD), of whom 3.8% and 3.1% were familial cases.
