Social Stress –Induced Behavioral Adaptations in Females: A Focus on Midline Thalamus Crh Neurons

Alcohol use disorder often co-occurs with other neuropsychiatric disorders, with an increased likelihood of coincidence in women compared with men (1). Furthermore, previous stress exposure has been linked to both mood and alcohol use disorders, but there remains little basic neuroscience research focusing on females in these behavioral domains. Adaptive (and thus stress-induced maladaptive) behaviors can be sexually dimorphic in their expression. As such, established behavioral paradigms that have been used for decades in males do not readily transfer to females, creating a major obstacle for researchers as the field embraces research in female subjects.
