The Human Muscle Size and Strength Relationship: Effects of Architecture, Muscle Force, and Measurement Location

Conclusions In conclusion, using contemporary methods to assess muscle architecture and calculate EFFPCSA did not enhance the muscle strength–size association. For understanding/monitoring muscle size, the major determinant of strength, these findings support the assessment of muscle volume, which is independent of architecture measurements and was most highly correlated with strength.

This study assessed the intra-acquirer, intra- and inter-processor reliability, and validity of the in vivo assessment of the medial gastrocnemius (MG), lateral gastrocnemius (LG) and soleus (SOL) muscle volumes using freehand 3D ultrasound (3DUS) in typically developing infants. Reliability assessments of freehand 3DUS were undertaken in infants across three ages groups: three, six and twelve months of age, with validity testing completed against magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in infants at 3 months of age. Freehand 3DUS scanning was carried out by a single acquirer, with two independent processors manually segmenting i...

ConclusionChoriocarcinoma is not only associated with hyperthyroidism but can induce thyroid storm. Beta-human chorionic gonadotropin is directly associated with promoting thyroid dysfunction. Patients with gestational trophoblastic disease should be under close surveillance to prevent thyroid storms.

It is extremely important to make a clear diagnosis and timely treatment of endocrine tumors. Machine learning includes radiomics, which has long been utilized in clinical cancer research. Radiomics refers to the extraction of valuable information by analyzing a large amount of standard data with high-throughput medical images mainly including computed tomography, positron emission tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasound. With the quantitative imaging analysis and ...

ConclusionsIf the patient was misdiagnosed with polymyalgia rheumatica or elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis based on only clinical symptoms and laboratory data, his symptoms might not improve due to insufficient steroid dose and vascular complications may occur later. Although rare, peripheral neuropathy in giant cell arteritis may include cervical radiculopathy. The musculoskeletal ultrasound and precise neurological examination were the turning points for the diagnosis of this case, and making a careful diagnosis using these methods was important.

Histotripsy has been previously applied to target various cranial locations in vitro through an excised human skull. Recently, a transcranial magnetic resonance (MR)-guided histotripsy (tcMRgHt) system was developed, enabling pre-clinical investigations of tcMRgHt for brain surgery. To determine the feasibility of in vivo transcranial histotripsy, tcMRgHt treatment was delivered to eight pigs using a 700-kHz, 128-element, MR-compatible phased-array transducer inside a 3-T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner.

AbstractPurposeTo prospectively evaluate the technical success rate of real-time computed tomography/magnetic resonance imaging and ultrasound (CT/MRI-US) automatic fusion system and the long-term therapeutic efficacy of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) guided by automatic fusion in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients.Materials and Methods139 patients with 151 HCCs were prospectively enrolled for RFA guided by an automatic CT/MRI-US fusion system (PercuNav system, Philips, the Netherlands). Automatic fusion imaging, based on vascular segmentation and registration, was performed by sonographic sweeping at the intercostal p...

In this study, we aimed to create an inexpensive, portable device for recording the sound produced by the knee joint, and a dedicated application for its analysis. During the study, we examined fourteen volunteers of different ages, including those who had a knee injury. The device effectively enables the recording of the sounds produced by the knee joint, and the spectral analysis used in the application proved its reliability in evaluating the knee joint condition.
