Mitochondrial diseases

We aim to describe clinical characteristics of patients with mitochondrial diseases admitted to intensive care unit, and investigate the factors related to mortality and clinical outcome. We retrospectively studied 16 pediatric patients with mitochondrial diseases resulting in 34 ICU admissions from Jan 2007 to Jan 2017. Demographics, clinical characteristics during ICU admission and prediction of mortality scores including PRISM-III and PIM 3 were obtained. Overall, 17 patients (9 males and 8 females) were admitted to ICU for 34 occasions due to respiratory difficulty (55.9%), sepsis (23.6%), status epilepticus (8.8%), postoperative care (8.8%) and gastrointestinal bleeding (2.9%).
