Myotonic dystrophy

Patient report offers a simple and cost-effective means of identifying and tracking progression of oro-pharyngeal dysphagia (OPD) in degenerative conditions. Whilst validated patient-report tools have been developed for OPD in progressive conditions such as Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson's Disease, the ability of individuals living with Myotonic Dystrophy Type 1 (DM1) to self-report signs and symptoms of their condition is not considered to be reliable. This leads to concerns about using patient-report to identify and manage OPD.
