Antidepressant activity of Riparin A in murine model

Depression and anxiety are common neuropsychiatric disorders that usually appear as comorbidities. The development of new drugs is crucial for safer and more effective clinical management of both disorders. Riparin A is a synthetic chemical analog of riparins that naturally occur in several medicinal plants. Marked pharmacological effects such as anxiolytic and antidepressant properties characterize this class of compounds. However, little is known about the potential anxiolytic and antidepressant effects of Riparin A. In this work, we showed that, unlike other riparins, Riparin A exerts only a very mild anxiolytic-like effect as demonstrated by the results of classical behavioral tests such as the elevated plus-maze, light–dark box and open-field tests in rats. However, all doses of Riparin A (2.5; 5.0 and 10 mg/kg; intraperitoneal) have shown significant antidepressant activity in rats submitted to forced swimming test. In addition to this interesting pharmacological property, Riparin A did not promote any important alterations in the locomotor performance of the animals as specifically demonstrated by the rotarod test. Furthermore, Riparin A did not induce sedation in treated animals; instead, this compound appears to increase the animal’s state of alertness as measured by the latency time to loss of reflexes and time to recovery from sleep in rats submitted to the pentobarbital-induced sleep time test. The present results point to an antidepressant effect of R...

Conclusion: Anxiety and depression status are common in caregivers of children with epilepsy, with depression status being more prominent. Moreover, a considerable proportion of caregivers had poor sleep quality and unhealthy family function. The caregivers' anxiety status, sleep quality, family role dimension, family general function dimension, and the number of co-caregivers were predictors of depression status in caregivers. In clinical practice, caregivers' anxiety and depression status, poor sleep quality, and unhealthy family functioning should be addressed along with the treatment of children with epilepsy.

Conclusions: Mental conditions of PLWH varied considerably among subgroups, inspiring psychiatrists and clinicians that personalized invention to a particular subgroup was essential and might be more effective during treatment than adopting the same therapeutic schedule.

In the wake of multiple legal challenges, the Biden Administration late last month aimed to fortify the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program with a new rule that would shield more than 600,000 undocumented people brought to the U.S. by their parents. While proponents of the program welcomed the move and heralded it an “effort to bulletproof the DACA program,” our response in this moment overlooks a fundamental problem: each challenge on immigration—whether the Muslim Ban, family separation, or challenging DACA—takes a toll on refugee and migrants through vicarious trauma and weather...

CONCLUSION: This pilot trial provided preliminary evidence for the feasibility and efficacy of targeting sleep improvement with a combined CBTi/SMT protocol. This provides the groundwork for future RCTs to establish the effectiveness of targeting insomnia in a range of medical populations.PMID:34672904 | DOI:10.1080/15402002.2021.1993227

Background: The association between migraine and suicide ideation has been identified. However, the predictive factors of suicidal ideation are still controversial and whether migraine with aura can serve as an independent associated factor is uncertain. This manuscript studied the association between migraine with aura and suicidal ideation and explored the predictive factors for suicidal ideation. Methods: We surveyed 9,057 medical students and included 579 medical students with migraine into our study population. All students completed the General Situation Questionnaire, the Verified Headache Questionnaire, Hamilton Anx...

Conclusion: Overall, the pooled prevalence of apathy, depression, anxiety, irritability, agitation and aggression, sleep disorders, and eating disorder was generally high in patients with dementia. Also, the prevalence of some BPSD characteristics differed according to the type and the severity of dementia. The methodological quality of the included studies is not the best, and high heterogeneity may affect the certainty of the findings. However, the results of this review can deepen our understanding of the prevalence of BPSD.Systematic Review Registration:https://osf.io/dmj7k, identifier: 10.17605/OSF.IO/DMJ7K.

CONCLUSION: Given that other health behaviours were associated with e-cigarette initiation, prevention approaches should target multiple health-risk behaviours to help prevent youth e-cigarette use. Additionally, school-based approaches may benefit by being implemented at the beginning of high school or in junior high school.PMID:34668684 | DOI:10.24095/hpcdp.41.10.04
