Effects of CYP2D6 Genotypes on Venlafaxine Metabolism in Japanese Psychiatric Patients With Depression

This study evaluated the effects of the CYP2D6*10 and CYP2D6*5 genotypes on the steady-state plasma concentrations of VEN and ODV in Japanese patients. Methods: This study included 75 Japanese patients with depression who were treated with VEN. Steady-state plasma concentrations of VEN and ODV were measured using liquid chromatography. Polymerase chain reaction was used to determine CYP2D6 genotypes. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between independent variables (sex, age, smoking habit, and number of mutated alleles, CYP2D6*10 and CYP2D6*5), subject-dependent variables (plasma concentrations of VEN and ODV [all corrected for dose and body weight]), and the ODV/VEN ratio. Results: Significant correlations were observed between the daily dose of VEN (corrected for body weight) and plasma concentrations of VEN (r = 0.498, P

ConclusionAddressing GPs ’ needs is essential when implementing depression screening tools in clinical practice. To overcome prejudices and enhance the efficacy of screening, further education for GPs on the purpose and application on depression screening may be needed. Standardized GP-targeted feedback in combination wit h depression screening could be the missing link to improve the detection of depression in primary care.

ConclusionESMvis is a showcase on providing personalized feedback by dynamic visualization of ESM time-series data. Our tool is freely available and adjustable, making it widely applicable. In addition to potential applications in clinical practice, ESMvis can work as an exploratory tool that can lead to new hypotheses and inform more complex statistical techniques.

This study aims to examine the consequent changes in medical school curricula alongside students’ mental and physical health. It is observed that 549 medical students (response rate: 79.7%) from 31 of 37 public medical schools in Germany completed a cross-sectional online survey. Students answered questions regarding teaching, internet use, COVID-19 and well-being. A multivariate logistic regression examined factors associated with depressed mood, insomnia and headache. Academic teaching moved to a virtual environment (91%), whilst practical activities were suspended or cancelled (88%). Virtual teaching modalit...

Older adults prescribed stimulant medications appear to be at an elevated risk of cardiovascular problems in the first 30 days after beginning the treatment, according to astudy published today inJAMA Network Open. However, these risks decrease over time, with no evidence of increased cardiovascular risk at six months and one year after initiating treatment.“Although stimulants are most commonly used among children and youth for the treatment of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), an increase in stimulant use among older adults in recent years has been observed,” wrote Mina Tadrous, PharmD., Ph.D.,...

ConclusionsPatients with ICM and VT undergoing first-line ablation have a significantly lower rate of appropriate ICD therapies without a mortality difference compared with patients receiving an initial approach based on medical therapy. The beneficial effect of a first-line ablation approach was only observed in patients with moderately depressed LVEF (>  30–50%).
