SARS-CoV-2 neutralizing antibodies decline after one year and patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia display a unique cytokine profile

‘Coronavirus Disease 2019’ (COVID-19), caused by the highly transmissible and pathogenic severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has so far infected about 220 million people worldwide, leading to more than 4.6 million deaths within a period of 21 months. In Thailand, approxi mately 1.3 million cases and over 13,000 deaths have been confirmed at the time of writing (2021). The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has taken a significant toll on global public health and economy, calling for a deeper understanding of immune correlates of protection against SARS-CoV-2 that may be vita l for implementation of mitigation strategies and development of treatments and vaccines.
