New social care levy shows government priorities are all wrong, says UNISON

Commenting today (Tuesday) on government plans for a new health and social care levy in England, UNISON general secretary Christina McAnea said: “General taxation should be the solution for social care, not national insurance hikes. The focus on funding instead of reform is a cart-before-the-horse approach. “A detailed plan is needed first to mend and future-proof a sector broken by years of neglect. Only then will the cost of making good the damage become clear. “A care blueprint must outline the government’s vision for a national service that matches NHS principles and values. “Decent pay for undervalued employees must take centre stage along with a long-term workforce strategy and improved standards of care.” Notes to editors:           – UNISON is the UK’s largest union with more than 1.3 million members providing public services in education, local government, the NHS, police service and energy. They are employed in the public, voluntary and private sectors.
